The Lots Of Boring Writing Page

This project was based on the idea of a person
leaving his or her homeplace and travelling someplace foreign. It was also
based on the idea of containment i.e. the idea of the project being contained
within a container (a box) within a container (the aeroplane). The original
plan was for it to travel to Newfoundland. Unfortunately, this didn't happen.
I don't know why. I also don't care why but anyway, now we have to exhibit
them in the horrible main college. Anyway, I don't really mind because,
well, I'm a bit insane. ''We all go a little mad sometimes.'' (Norman Bates
- 'Psycho' and Billy Loomis - 'Scream') Anyway, after two weeks of arduous
and strenuous talking and looking we set about to develop our own ideas
on how the project will evolve. Personally, it had taken me a while to
develop a decent workable idea as we had just come back from St. Patrick's
Day weekend. We all went out to Geoffs and got pretty drunk. Seamus drank
too much and had to leave early. It was really funny. After Geoffs we went
for pizza. They didn't have any Pinapple for Jimmy's pizza.

| So Anyway I set out to do some work on the idea of leaving home. What would I bring? To answer this question I looked at what I brought with me when I moved from Wicklow to Waterford to 'study' here at college. I realised that I had unconsciously moulded my new bedroom in Waterford in the shape of my room back home. I then messed about with the idea of a box made entirely of clothing with my own bedroom hidden inside it. As if it was hidden inside me, wherever I go and all that other metaphorical bullshit that goes on inside our artistic heads. I liked the idea of the hidden room but the it proved too hard to make the material box in the way I had invisioned (intelligent, huh?) so I decided top make the box up with holes and sections cut out to insert the rows of clothes in. I would then cut sections into the material, allowing the viewers to see directly into the 'heart' of my world: my room. |
| So now I had an idea, I began the construction of this soon to be great masterpiece. As I progressed I decided to make the inside room (an authentic small scale replica of my actual bedroom) more visable by lighting it from the inside. Pretty sweet! The material I had but I wasn't sure what kind of finish to put on the outer box. I thought of paper mache-ing on some photos of me as a little nipper, but, frankly, no. I was rooting around and I found an old book on my favourite film of all time, fully illustrated of course, and I cut it to pieces. Like you do. Anyway I paper mached the pictures onto the box and it was really sweet. |
