My finished piece contained some
of the ideas I had initially but used them in a totally different way.
My father works with wood and because I have always been very close to
him the base of my project, a wooden box corresponds to him. He has always
been the stabiling influence in my life (this corresponds to to the idea
of my childhood being safe and secure) The box is covered with pictures
that remind me of home as well as symbols that represent "Home and earth
in different cultures and cults. On top of the box is a sod of grass taken
fom my garden at home, this again represents my feelings of security at
home as does the domed shape on top of it. The seeds covering it relate
to one of the travel rituals I researched which spoke of seeds as representing
a new beginning. The outside of this dome represents new beginnings ie;
travel, while the inside represents security and home/earth. The inside
is coated with cotton wool and nestling in the centre is a metal shape
into which I rubbed gold paint to show that it was precious. This shape
which I found in a scrap yard reminded me of a symbol that I came across
in my research which meant earth and home. This tied in nicely to my project. The
two triangles on top of the dome represent security and insecurity, the
top one is tilted to give the feeling of insecurity ie; if it was hit against
or tapped it might just fall over. There are feathers coming out of the
centre of the triangles which relate to the theme of travel. And now, if
you are not asleep, you can click below to see all the pieces I have just
rambled on about.
