The academic course is structured in three stages. In stage
one, which covers the first two terms of year one, students are introduced
to arrange of artistic media, and acquire the basic skills necessary for
their practice by using 2D, 3D, photographic and computer methods. Stage
two extends over the following four terms, and students continue to develop
their skills and confidence within the various subject disciplines. At
the same time (under the guidance of course tutors) activity is focused
upon a sequence of four key themes which have been carefully chosen for
their relevance to current art issues.
Art & Environment.
Art & Technology.
Art & Performance.
Art & Society.
At the start of stage three, which introduces the final year
of the course, students are able
to make a guided choice of one of the previous key areas in
which to further develop their own area of special interest. Throughout
the course, studio practice will be informed and enhanced by art historical
and theoretical elements as well as psychology and sociology running in
tandem with specific stage emphases. Study of a language is also a mandatory
element of this course. In 1995, students could chose between Italian and
Spanish, both offered at beginners' level.
