Support for Students with Disabilities

Waterford Institute of Technology is committed to implementing a policy of equal opportunities for people with disabilities. Focusing on ability, the Institute ensures that people with disabilities are facilitated by providing 'reasonable accommodations' to meet their requirements.

The aims of the Disability Office are:

  • To affirm the ability of students with disabilities to pursue their chosen courses of study.
  • To support students with disabilities by offering a range of services, e.g. Assistive Technology Resource Centre, Learning Support etc.
  • To raise awareness of the rights and needs of persons with disabilities throughout the Institute and the wider community.

A Disability Officer/Coordinator is available to meet students pursuing programmes at the Institute. Students are encouraged to meet the Disability Officer/Coordinator as soon as possible to ensure that all necessary arrangements can be put in place.

European Social Fund: Applications for students with disabilities are required to be submitted to the National Office for Equity of Access to Third Level Education by mid-October of each academic year.

Support Services are offered, for example, to students who are visually impaired, students with mobility difficulties, students with learning difficulties - including dyslexia, students with hidden disabilities such as mental health difficulties.   The confidential service provides an individualised, customised response to each student's needs, focusing on the individual and not the disability.

Specific Exam Accommodations

'Reasonable Accommodations' in examinations are available for students with disabilities who are approved for such supports.

Disability Office - CHART (Centre for Helping Access Retention and Teaching)

The Disability Office - CHART works directly with the Disability Liaison Committee at Waterford Institute of Technology and with Academic, Technical and Administrative staff as appropriate, together with Government Departments and Voluntary Agencies.
