Risk Assessment

The policy of the Institute is to identify hazards in the place of work, to assess the risk to safety and health, and to control risks as far as is practicable so that they are reduced to an acceptable level.

A Hazard is defined as any substance, article, material or practice, which has the potential to cause harm to the safety, health or welfare of personnel .

A Risk refers to the likelihood that harm from a particular hazard may be realised.

Risk assessment are based on linking the probability of an occurrence with the severity of loss and/or injury.   Risks will be graded “High”, “Medium” or “Low”, which will allow for the prioritisation of control measures and the allocation of resources.  Written risk assessments will be carried out for work practices in each department/function and will form the basis of the departmental safety statement.
