Blended Learning FAQ

What is Blended Learning?

Blended Learning is an approach to course design that brings together the best of both face-to-face and online strategies. It is not intended to replace either of these individual approaches, rather to build from each to create an innovative and more effective learning experience for our students.

The broad geographical spread of the target group of learners represented the major motivation behind the introduction of an innovative blended approach which provides for greater access and flexibility to the NALA/WIT programmes. The Project initially piloted WIT's first blended learning programme in 2003 / 2004 in the form of a single module of the National Certificate in Literacy Development (namely Quality Management). The success of this module has resulted in continued research and further development of additional blended modules of the NALA/WIT programme.

The NALA/WIT Blended Learning Initiative has attempted to leverage that which is best done in-person (group presentations; debates; reflexive response/thought) in combination with that which is best done online (deeper, reflective discourse; document management and organisation). In this view, the traditional 2 blocks of 3 day classes which are typical of NALA/WIT modules is reconsidered with an equivalent combination of face-to-face and online work (typically 2 days of face to face contact followed by six weeks of online discussion which is supported by a subject matter expert who is trained in the use of WebCT the online course management system used by WIT).

How does Blended Learning differ from traditional delivery methods?

  • 1 Residential Session instead of 2
