Placement Visits

The WIT mentor will visit the students at their place of work during their placement, usually around 3 months after starting.

The Purpose of the Visit is:

  • The main purpose of the visit is to ensure that the work placement will be successful from the employer, student and the college perspective
  • To see that the student is being treated correctly, is learning and is working in a safe and positive environment
  • To meet the student’s supervisor to discuss performance
  • To ensure that the log book is being kept and monitored

More specifically,

1.  Get Employer Interim Feedback

  • Check that the employer is satisfied with the work placement.  During the visit, the mentor will check with the work supervisor that all is going well and find out if there are any problems.
  • If there are problems, the mentor will discuss these with the student and try to facilitate a resolution.  However ultimately, it is the responsibility of the supervisor and the student to work out any work issues between them.
  • If the supervisor is not available on the day of the visit, the visit can proceed but contact should be made with the supervisor by e-mail or telephone after the visit.

2.  WIT Mentor Interim Assessment

  • The mentor should have some private time with the student to ensure that the student is being treated fairly and correctly and to discuss any college issues (re-sit of exams etc.).
  • If the student has problems unrelated to the work placement, the mentor will try to help.
  • The mentor will check the log book during the visit and see if it has been started and is being kept correctly
  • Check that the student is satisfied with the placement and offer encouragement if required

3. Continue line of contact between the Mentor, the Student and the Supervisor

  • The visit should enable a working relationship to be continued between the mentor and the student and the mentor and the work supervisor.
  • It is an opportunity to check that contact details for all three parties are up-to-date.
  • Following the visit, the mentor should be able to contact the student and the work supervisor from time to time and vice-versa.
