Stage 1: Preparatory Presentation
We organise a presentation for the BBS students in September. In this session:
- We explain how the work placement programme works
- Advise the students on how to complete their CV
- Provide application and deadline details
- Forms are completed by students, e.g. Careers centre
- A presentation is given by the CV Section on interview preparation and procedures
- And possibly a presentation from an employer giving interview advice.
Stage 2: CV Submission
Using advice given from the Careers Centre and instructions given on the Student Response Forms and Confidentiality Forms of the work placement website, students must submit a CV by the stated deadline. Access the online CV to get advice on how to complete your work placement CV.
Stage 3: CV Circulation - Interviews
The work placement team contacts employers all over Ireland to provide details of their work placement requirements. Potential employers revert stating these requirements. Once submitted, student CVs are matched with the employers' requirements and with the student preferences regarding location. CVs are then submitted to potential employers, but there is no guarantee that students will get their ideal preferences. Employers then select the students they want to interview and the students are notified by the work placement team. Check out the Interview section on this website for tips before your interview. Interviews are held either on campus or at the employer's premises.
Stage 4: Your Work Placement
The BBS work placement will be for at least 6 months, commencing in January though the student and employer may agree to extend this through the summer months. During your work placement, you will be treated like a regular employee, subject to the same conditions as regular staff members.
Student remuneration is at the discretion of the employer and it is expected that the student will be paid at least the minimum wage. Your employer and your WIT mentor will both monitor your performance during your placement.
Stage 5: Log Books
The first page of the log-book must be completed by the student as early as possible into the work placement programme and returned to Annette Toms, Placement Administrator in the School of Business. The log book itself should be dowloaded from the web and can be maintained as a computer file. If they wish, the employer is able to provide, at the end of the log book, overall feedback on the student's performance. At the end of the placement (or 31 August, if sooner) a printed copy must be signed by the student and employer, and returned to the Work Placement Office.
Stage 6: Work Placement Assessment
The WIT mentor will review the log book during a site visit to the student and also when it has been returned to the Work Placement Office, at which time the mentor will also sign the log book. The three signatures (student, employer supervisor, and WIT mentor) indicate a 'pass', and their absence a 'fail', there being no grading for this semester.
