BBS update 4 January Posted: Mon, January 4, 2010 |
Phase-over Plan – next week:
Decision Date: Monday January 11 is the last day for you to make a decision on what you are going to do during the flexible term. If you do not have a work placement position on that date you need to let us know what other option you are taking. You will need to return to college on Monday January 11 and attend flexible semester lectures for New Venture Initiative or College and Community. If we do not hear from you by that date we will assume you have opted for College and Community. Time and place for lectures on Monday will be on the School Notice Board.
For those of you who did not secure a position yet: This year was a more difficult year than last year in getting work placement jobs. This is understandable taking to account the freeze in hiring in the public sector and lay-offs and down-sizing in the private sector. We are sorry that you could not get a position and we wish you well in your College and Community or New Venture Initiative semester.
Last Day for interviews: There will be no interviews conducted after Friday 8th January unless the interview was arranged prior to that date.
You should let Annette Toms at bbsplacement@wit.ie know if you have secured a work placement position yourself.
For our latest statistics, follow this link. Note that the 'CV sent' column indicates how many CVs were sent to prospective employers and some CVs have been sent to more than one employer.
4 jobs were confirmed by Zurich Insurances over the Christmas break. We are awaiting news from students that secured positions directly over the break.
There are CVs out with 13 companies at the moment.
Unpaid Internships/placement:
The experience gained in work placement is the most important aspect of the placement from your career’s perspective. Whether the placement position is paid or unpaid is not relevant in your long-term career.
Opportunities
There are still some unpaid work placement positions available to students:
Start-up Technology Company Support: A start up enterprise in web-based technology located in the south-east seeks a self motivated student to research and prepare a feasibility study for the development of a web based electronic money facility. This would be a non-paying position. This position would involve working with the promoter on some of the following (any tasks would be agreed and prioritised with the promoter):
Market and technology research, new product development planning, research of possible technology transfer, licensing, partnerships assessment, marketing and advertising and promotion planning, distribution channel analysis, sales organisation planning, import/export opportunities identification, business planning and launch and implementation planning.
The position would suit an outgoing marketing stream student who is capable of working on his/her own in a loosely structured non-routine environment.
Waterford County Council in Dungarvan may have some unpaid placements for six month period. If you are interested (all streams) let us know and we will send your CV to them.
Waterford Credit Union has an intern position (non-paying) available from January to the end of June. Website: http://www.waterfordcu.ie/

Arklow Business Enterprise Centre has vacancies for two Marketing Assistant positions. These are non-paying internships.
