Jobs update: 1 job secured last week. In addition we are awaiting feedback from interviews in Alza on Friday and formal confirmation from the employers for three other jobs sourced directly by students. Well done to all the students who were interviewed.
CVs sent: this week to Cleaboy Business Park, Hilti, Pims and Crowley McCarthy.
Interviews this week: Strand Travel will be holding follow-up interviews at their premises this week. The Janssen interviews postponed from last week will be held this week.
We will not be scheduling any interviews during the examination period.
We have CVs out with 17 companies at the moment but not many have come back yet with interview plans. We will keep phoning them and also keep looking for new opportunities. The companies are: Crowley McCarthy, Curran Signs, Fitzgerald Power, Friends First, Glavin and Rohan, Hilti, Martins, McInerneys, Michael Walsh, Midleton CU, NVD, PIMS, Portarlington CU, Ronan McCarthy, Selfcatering.ie, Skelly O'Sullivan and Stada.
Flextronics and Laois Co. Co, who also received CVs, have notified us that they are not taking students this year due to economic circumstances.
We would like to remind you that the final responsibility for getting you a position rests with you. We can provide you with a letter of introduction to give with your CV to prospective employers in the locations of your choice. The jobs market is much tougher this year than prior years and we may not be able to get everyone a job at this stage.
If you are thinking of changing from work placement, here are the contact details:
New Venture Initiative: Contact Clare Gately at cgately@wit.ie . There are some places available still in this programme. Contact Clare by email.
College and Community: Contact is Corinne Power-O’Mahony: CPower-OMahony@wit.ie
Note that if you switch to college and community before Christmas early you may have a choice as to what community project you end up doing. If you wait until January 12 (start of semester 2) then you may be given a project without a choice.
Apply through Annette for this college and community job:
Kilkenny Arts Week: Marketing Student: This is a college and community job with a difference. Full specification of the job not yet received but it involves assisting in devising and delivering the 2009 integrated marketing campaign covering all promotional tools… marketing, PR, advertising, web, merchandise etc… involvement in all liaison with key marketing stakeholders and managing budgets of same.
Prompt Responses: We need students to promptly respond to e-mails when we arrange interviews and when you get job offers. We cannot keep companies waiting for responses!
Opportunities as at December 5:
Fitzgerald Nurseries, Stoneyford Co. Kilkenny. Marketing position: NOTE: we have had no applicants for this job. Students do not need to be marketing stream students to apply for this position. In the current economic climate, we should not be turning away companies with good opportunities like this. Last week’s report contained information about this job and there is additional information in the work placement office.
Let us know if you would like your CV to be sent to this company.
Phase-over Plan - next few weeks:
Decision Date: Monday January 12 is the last day for you to make a decision on what you are going to do during the flexible term. If you do not have a work placement position on that date you need to let us know what other option you are taking. You will need to return to college on Monday January 12 and attend a flexible semester lecture for new venture initiative or college and community. If we do not hear from you by that date we will assume you have opted for college and community. We strongly suggest that you investigate either a work placement or a college and community project in your local area over the Christmas shut-down period.
Last Day for interviews: There will be no interviews conducted after Friday 8th January unless the interview was arranged prior to January 8th. We will continue trying to find placement jobs up to that date. You will need to keep checking your e-mails and the website over the holiday season and through to January 8th. There may be jobs posted and interviews arranged during the holiday period. We will continue to issue this update to you.
You should let Annette Toms at atoms@wit.ie know if you have secured a work placement position yourself.
The work placement team wishes you all the best of luck with your exams and offers you and your families our best wishes for a safe, healthy and happy Christmas and for a successful new year in your flexible semester positions!
