BBS weekly udpdate as at Friday 28 November 2008 Posted: Mon, December 1, 2008 |
For the latest statistics, follow this link.
Jobs update: 4 Jobs were secured last week: (Mount Sion (2), Whitfield Clinic (1) and 1 student sourced a job directly. In addition we are awaiting formal confirmation from employers for some other jobs sourced directly by students. Well done to all the students who were interviewed.
CVs being sent this week: Pims in Co. Waterford, Hilti in Dublin and Crowley McCarthy in Clonakilty.
The bad news this week is that VHI has confirmed to us that they will not be taking any work placement students this year. They hired some of our graduates this October and “don’t have the space to take in students this year”.
Some students applied directly to Ballymitty Supply Stores Ltd, and Hickey Associates Accountants Cork and we have been notified by these companies that they are not taking placements this year.
Interviews this week: Friday: Alza in Cashel (Accounting position), Jansen in Cork (HR position) -interviews at their company premises and Strand Travel, Waterford - interviews in WIT.
We have CVs out with 16 companies at the moment but not many have come back yet with interview plans. The 16 companies are: Curran Signs, Fitzgerald Power, Flextronics, Friends First, Glavin and Rohan, Laois Co. Co., Martins, McInerneys, Michael Walsh, Midleton CU, NVD, Portarlington CU, Ronan McCarthy, Selfcatering.ie, Skelly O'Sullivan, and Stada.
We would like to remind you that the final responsibility for getting you a position rests with you. We can provide you with a letter of introduction to give with your CV to prospective employers in the locations of your choice. The jobs market is much tougher this year than prior years and we may not be able to get everyone a job at this stage.
If you are thinking of changing from work placement, here are the contact details:
New Venture Initiative: Contact Clare Gately at cgately@wit.ie . There are some places available still in this programme. Contact Clare by email.
College and Community: Contact is Corinne Power-O’Mahony: CPower-OMahony@wit.ie
Note that if you switch to college and community before Christmas early you may have a choice as to what community project you end up doing. If you wait until January 12 (start of semester 2) then you may be given a project without a choice.
There are two interesting positions available through College and Community as follows:
Marketright, The Glen, Waterford: Marketing Student: This is a College and Community position with a difference, including a nominal fee (paid at the end of project at owner’s discretion). The position is a 3-day a week marketing support to a very small marketing company. The projects in the pipeline include a competitive analysis piece in the high tech industry, a major awareness campaign, and a strategy implementation at a manufacturing company in Kilkenny. The student will learn a great deal and be in the middle of some very interesting initiatives.
Kilkenny Arts Week: Marketing Student: This is another College and Community position with a difference. Full specification of the job not yet received but it involves assisting in devising and delivering the 2009 integrated marketing campaign covering all promotional tools… marketing, PR, advertising, web, merchandise etc… involvement in all liaison with key marketing stakeholders and managing budgets of same.
Although these are under the umbrella of College and Community, you should notify Annette if you are interested.
Prompt Responses: We need students to promptly respond to e-mails when we arrange interviews and when you get job offers. We cannot keep companies waiting for responses!
New Opportunities as at November 28:
Fitzgerald Nurseries, Stoneyford Co. Kilkenny.: Marketing position: See details of company and job in work placement office. This is a very challenging position with a young vibrant Irish company and a chance for some unique marketing experience.
Company quote: “The type of person we need is someone who is a good self starter, conscientious and wants to help us succeed in an overall objective of using our market position, our R&D and our branding to make the company a profitable entity in challenging times. A lot of work has gone into the product range, development and strategy so I think it is an interesting rural model both for the college and for the student”.
Let us know if you would like your CV to be sent to this company.
Interview clothes: We remind you to have your interview clothes always available in Waterford so that you are available for interview at short notice. We try to give as much notice as possible but sometimes this is not possible.
Check e-mails and Website: Again we remind you to check your e-mails daily and also check the website each day in case e-mails are not getting through to you.
We have been experiencing difficulty getting through to students with yahoo.ie e-mail addresses. If this continues, we will contact such students by text where necessary.
