BBS weekly update as at Friday 14 December 2007
Posted: Mon, December 17, 2007

See this link for the latest table of positions obtained.

This report is issued to all work placement students.   We have 97 students placed at this stage, 80% of total.  Note that 57 jobs were obtained from employers that provided positions last year and 40 are from first-time employers that we sourced this year.  This is our last report in December - we will resume reporting in early January.

Log Books:  Those students who have secured a work placement position should complete the header page of the log book as soon as possible after you commence employment.  This gives the name and address of the employer, name of your supervisor and contact e-mail addresses and telephone numbers.  The template for the log book header page is on the placement website: follow this link.

Those who do not have a placement yet may want to think about being more flexible on location preferences and may want to become more proactive in seeking a position.  We remind you that the final responsibility for getting you a position rests with you.  We can provide you with a letter of introduction to give to prospective employers.

We are awaiting interview feedback from Portarlington Credit Union, Hasbro and Ericsson.

Upcoming Interviews:  Sam McCauley (21/12), Laois Co. Co., Byrne Group (21/12), Friends First (21/12), Musgraves (3/1), Agnition (8/1).

Opportunities as at December 17
Note that we put job descriptions on the notice board in the placement office and you should have a look at what is there from time to time.  If you like a particular job or jobs you can let us know and we will send your CV to the employers.

Glaxo Smith Kline (GSK) is a multinational pharmaceutical company with plants in various places around Ireland.  They operate a central standardised work placement process which requires students to apply directly through a central website address.  If you are interested in applying for a position with this company you can register your interest via the website http://www.gsk.com/careers/uk-ip-manufacturing.htm .  There is a students/undergraduate section to search.  Note that they have 2 plants in Dungarvan but there are no student placements positions open for these, according to their HR department.  There are other plants in the Cork area.

Symantec Limited, Ballycoolin Business Park, Blanchardstown, Dublin 15; has 4 openings for work placement students (see job descriptions on board in the work placement office), accounting and economics stream.  The centre has a multi-cultural environment with many workers from European countries working there.

VHI in Kilkenny has informed us that they still have additional requirements for students.  They are seeking to hire 26 students in total from any stream.

We will notify you both by e-mail and via the website of any other positions that may become available during the holiday period.   Please keep checking your e-mail and the website regularly.

Let us know if you would like your CV to be sent to one or more of these companies - by e-mail at BBSPlacement@wit.ie or by by calling in to us in D20.

Phase-over Plan - next few weeks:
Decision Date:  Monday January 14 is the last day for you to make a decision on what you are going to do during the flexible term.  If you do not have a work placement position on that date you need to let us know what other option you are taking.  You will need to return to college on Monday January 14 and attend a flexible semester lecture for new venture initiative or college and community.  If we do not hear from you by that date we will assume you have opted for college and community.  We strongly suggest that you investigate either a work placement or a college and community project in your local area over the Christmas shut-down period.

Last Day for interviews:   There will be no interviews conducted after Friday 11th January unless the interview was arranged prior to January 11th.  We will continue trying to find placement jobs up to that date.  You will need to keep checking your e-mails over the holiday season and through to January 11th.   There may be jobs posted and interviews arranged during the holiday period.   We will continue to issue this update to you and you should continue to access the work placement website.
You should let Annette Toms at atoms@wit.ie know if you have secured a work placement position yourself.
