Dr. Peter Carew is a lecturer in computing and information systems at the Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT).  Prior to joining WIT in 1998, Peter worked with world-famous Apple Computer as a software development engineer for a number of years, mainly for the California-based Typography Group, developing font tools and related typographic applications.  Peter also previously worked for AIB Capital Markets, developing tools for testing the SWIFT inter-bank funds transfer system, as well as performing other information technology (IT) related duties.  He also briefly worked with Goodbody Stockbrokers and Specsavers Opticians in IT-related support roles.  He has also occasionally conducted bespoke software development and/or consultancy for a number of small firms in both Ireland and the UK.

Since joining WIT in 1998, Peter has taught a wide range of undergraduate topics, including programming, data communications and networks, visual communications, HTML and web design, software engineering, database and file processing, and artificial intelligence.  Peter has also been the joint programme leader for the MSc in Computing (Information Systems Processes) programme at WIT since its inception in 2006.  He also teaches a postgraduate module on ethics and e-privacy on the programme, and has supervised many successful dissertations on it over the years.

Peter has been a member of the WIT Research Ethics Committee since 2007.  He has also served as an internal/second examiner for postgraduate students at WIT, and as an external examiner to the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology.

Peter joined INSYTE as a principal researcher in 2003, and has since supervised a number of postgraduate Masters research students to completion.  He also commenced research at that time, which focussed on privacy issues for information systems development.  This work has since resulted in a number of peer-reviewed conference and journal publications, and led to the award of PhD in 2009.  Peter continues to conduct research and supervise postgraduate students as part of his ongoing role at INSYTE.

Peter has been involved with various international conferences/bodies as a member of their organising committees (SESEM, IFAC SWIIS), technical committees (IFAC TC9.5/SWIIS), or as a reviewer (ECIS, IFAC SWIIS).  He has also attended and presented research at various international conferences.
