Waterford Institute of Technology honours high-achieving first year students

First-year students at Waterford Institute of Technology who secured 500 or more CAO college entry points have been recognised at a reception in the Institute.

Four students from Wexford, one from Tipperary and seven from Waterford received presentations from Prof Kieran R Byrne, President, Waterford Institute of Technology.

The Wexford students recognised were Sinead O’Gorman, Taghmon, who is pursuing a BSc (Hons) in General Nursing; Edel Lambert, Clonegal – BA (Hons) in Applied Social Studies in Social Care; Stacey Bradley, Newbawn – BSc in Forestry and Christopher Burke, Kilmore – BSc (Hons) in Pharmaceutical Science.

Saoirse Gahan, Carrick-on-Suir, Co Tipperary is now working towards a Bachelor of Business (Hons).

High-achievers from Waterford city and county in the 500-plus CAO points group were: Kyle O’Sullivan, Tramore – BA (Hons) in Legal Studies; Deirdre Brennan, Gracedieu – BA (Hons) in Visual Art; Anne Grogan, Kilmeaden, Co Waterford – BSc in Food Science with Business; Ciara O’Halloran, Fenor – Bachelor of Business (Hons) with French; Christopher Stephenson, Kilmeaden – Bachelor of Business (Hons); Patricia Jackman, Dunmore East – Bachelor of Business in Recreation & Sport Management and Tim O’Byrne, Butlerstown – BA (Hons) in Accounting.

Congratulating the students on their achievements and wishing them well with their studies at the Institute, Prof Byrne said: “You have shown that you have what it takes to succeed in second-level education and are now well placed to build on that platform with the degree programmes that you are following in Waterford.

“The diverse range of disciplines that you are now studying is itself an insight to the breadth of opportunity that exists at this Institute. In congratulating you on your achievements to date, I also want to acknowledge the support that you will have received at home and in school. Success at Leaving Cert requires a mix of considerable individual and team effort and I know you would want to acknowledge the backing you had with your studies and exam preparations.”
