WIT Director sends good wishes to students and alumni ahead of All-Ireland camogie finals Posted: Fri, September 11, 2009 |
Prof Kieran R Byrne, Director, Waterford Institute of Technology has sent good wishes to all four teams competing in Sunday’s Gala All-Ireland Senior and Junior Camogie Finals at Croke Park.
The senior final between Cork and Kilkenny will see Institute students Ann Dalton (captain), Colette Dormer, Michelle Quilty, Denise Gaule, Katie Power and Kelly Ann Cottrell join graduates Aine Fahy, Keeva Fennelly and Aoife Fitzpatrick as part of a young Kilkenny panel with Ann, Colette, Michelle, Denise and Katie set to start.
In the junior All-Ireland final between first time finalists Waterford and 2008 runners-up Offaly, the Waterford panel includes Jenny Simpson, Vicky Gaffney, Pauline Cunningham and Roisin Heylin from Waterford Institute of Technology while the team’s management pairing – Andy Moloney and Niall Dunphy – are both Institute graduates. Institute student Lorraine Keena and graduate Karen Nugent will start the game for Offaly.
Speaking ahead of the camogie finals, Prof Byrne said the strong representation among the panels in both finals served to underline the strength of GAA at the Institute. “Once again, Institute students and graduates will represent their counties with pride in the Gala All-Ireland Senior and Junior Camogie Finals on Sunday.
“In wishing all of them well for their respective finals, we also reflect on the contribution that Gaelic games make to the Institute community. This was also very evident last weekend when the Kilkenny senior hurlers completed their All-Ireland four-in-a-row with nine Institute alumni in their panel and five in the defeated Tipperary panel.
“We continue to attract exceptional young men and women from right across the southeast and beyond to study at the Institute and sport is a mainstay of the Waterford experience for many of our students who bring pride to their families and home communities in the way they represent Institute teams as well as their home clubs and counties. Through our sports scholarships scheme, we are able to both recognise and encourage excellence across all sporting disciplines.”
