Academic Programmes
Undergraduate Courses
Waterford Institute of Technology has the authority to confer undergraduate and postgraduate academic awards on successful graduates. The awards from the Dublin and Waterford Institutes are ratified directly by the National Qualifications Authority of Ireland (NQAI) which was established by the Government in June 2001, under the Qualifications (Education and Training) Act 1999. WIT's awards are internationally recognised.
The courses at WIT are compatible with the European Credit Transfer Scheme (ECTS).
Waterford Institute of Technology offers many different types of qualifications, and there is a high level of flexibility with regard to points of entry and exit along ones study path. At undergraduate level, awards are made at higher certificate, bachelor degrees and honours bachelor degree levels. Higher certificate courses normally take 2 years full-time study, bachelor degrees take 3 years and honours bachelors degrees take 4 years. On completion of one level of award, successful students can transfer directly to the next highest level. Students who have completed 2 or 3 year University or College awards in their own country may be considered for advanced entry and gain exemptions from years or subjects of courses at WIT, at the discretion of the admitting academic Department.
Undergraduate programs are available in five schools at Waterford Institute of Technology:
The School of Business
The School of Engineering
The School of Health Sciences
The School of Humanities
The School of Science
Most courses start on September of each year and finish in June. More information is available from international@wit.ie or the International Student Application Handbook.
Postgraduate Courses
WIT offers postgraduate opportunities to gain Masters and Doctoral (PhD) awards for students who have completed a Bachelors degree with first or second class honours. Achieving higher degrees greatly enhances the holders employability, earning capacity and promotional prospects. A small number of places are available for overseas students and there is great competition for these places. Higher degrees in WIT may be undertaken in either taught mode or research mode.
International students who wish to apply for postgraduate studies by research are advised to first enquire by e-mail from international@wit.ie before they spend a lot of time filling in application forms.
